Does Twitter Still Matter? Lessons From 5 Years On Twitter

| Social Media & Social Network | Comments Off

It's almost my fifth year anniversary on Twitter! If I remember right, it was in April 2007 that I first tweeted. Several thousand 'fail whales' later, I'm still around - with 16,000+ tweets under my belt. Late last night, back from a movie and browsing social networks at (for me) an unusual hour, I suddenly wondered if Twitter was still relevant. So I ran a little 'test'. Here's what I tweeted: "Snap poll - Who (of the 5378 following me) is a. awake now b. reading my tweets... Show of hands, please :-)" Almost immediately, I got 3 respo [ read more.. ]

Social Is, Well, Just Social…

| Social Media & Social Network | Comments Off

When you're holding a hammer, everything looks like a nail. And that's how social media looked to me when I viewed it through the lens of "online business". This is not to say that social media isn't useful for business, not at all. That would be stupid, because thousands of businesses a lot bigger and more successful than mine are using social networks in brilliant ways. But what I have realized over the last 4 years of engaging on social networks is that I'm not able to use it in a "business" sense. Not very well. And not quite effect [ read more.. ]

My New Resolution Is To…

| Social Media & Social Network | Comments Off

Lose Weight? No, but... I've been talking to some friends. Most have made a New Year resolution to lose weight. Me, I'm just about the same weight I've been since medical school, almost 30 years ago. But in one way, I've gained flab. Back in 1999, when domain names cost $35 a year to register, I had three. Today, I count 167 in my portfolio. Even as late as 2003, I was involved in only 3 niche markets. Today, I'm in 7 (and several smaller ones) And when social media took the Web by storm, I got on all major networks. Today, I'm act [ read more.. ]

How Social Media Affected My Style of Writing – And Why I’m Fighting Back

| Social Media & Social Network | Comments Off

It was around April 2007 that I joined Twitter. Since then, I've avidly embraced social networking online. On Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn, I have networks that run into the thousands. With a Klout score of 55 and a 'true reach' of over 2k, they tell me I'm a 'specialist'. Maybe without consciously setting these as targets, I did desire a similar result from the time invested into social networking. What I hadn't factored in was how much such participation and engagement would affect my writing style. In the past, I've research [ read more.. ]

Google+ Business Pages – To Do, Or Not To Do?

| Social Media & Social Network | Comments Off

Google recently announced G+ Business Pages for businesses and brands. I quickly set up two pages of mine - one for this blog, and the other for my information marketing business. It's EASY to do, and takes mere minutes! But the big question in many minds is this: "Should I bother? And why?" Frankly, no one has the definitive answer. The best ones are guesses, or rather bets on the future of Google+. After sifting through the evidence and reading some opinion editorials, the conclusion I reached was that Google+ Pages are worth setting [ read more.. ]

How To Consume And Use Social Media – In 15 Minutes a Day

| Social Media & Social Network | Comments Off

I wear many hats and juggle many projects. It's rare that I manage to find more than 15 minutes in my daily schedule to engage in social networking online. But that's plenty enough - because I have a routine that works well. I have a significant presence on Facebook, Twitter, Google + and some forums, all of which I follow reasonably closely... yet manage it all in under a quarter hour per day. Here's how my routine goes. On Twitter I log in to the Web based Twitter interface (though I have TweetDeck, I hardly ever use it, except on rare [ read more.. ]

Why I Follow You: My Social Networking Strategy

| Social Media & Social Network | Comments Off

Last night, my friend Madhuri Banerjee, author of the interesting novel, "Losing My Virginity and Other Dumb Ideas" noticed that I had stopped following her on Twitter. In an email, she asked: "Why did you unfollow me on Twitter?" As I pondered the answers, I realized it would help to share them with others also. Maybe it'll help you formulate a strategy of your own, or understand better if I 'unfollow' you on one or more channels of social media. Here are the reasons why I choose to follow (or stop following) someone on social networks I [ read more.. ]

My Game Plan for Google+ – It’s About Circles

| Social Media & Social Network | Comments Off

Now that Chris Brogan did it first, it may appear everyone else is just playing 'copycat'. But this has been my game plan ever since I joined G+ with a rudimentary strategy. Here it is, in a nutshell: * Grow my network to 5,000 * Set up Circles on 3 or 4 areas I intend sharing content * Ask people in my network which Circles interest them * Share relevant content with them - like an ezine or email list That's why I set up my Google+ Circles with 3 'sharing' Circles - non-profit, writing and book marketing, IM (information marketing) - and o [ read more.. ]

Google + In Ten Minutes a Day

| Social Media & Social Network | Comments Off

If all you have is ten minutes to explore Google+ in your busy day, then these 6 easy steps are for you. Now, I won't lie. G+ sucks me in for 30 to 45 minutes daily - but I'm just learning to use it, and see my way to comfortably fitting it all into 600 crowded seconds soon. 1. Get Real As +Vincent Mo, who has been beta-testing Google+ for almost a year, said: "Accept that you won't ever read everything that's on G+" Then, choose the (tiny) bits you can consume - in the limited time you have to do it. 2. Be Organized The key to intelligen [ read more.. ]

Circles = Sharing : How I’m Using Google+ Circles

| Social Media & Social Network | Comments Off

This is NOT "just another" post about Google+ or Circles. It's about how I'm using Circles - and why. On Google+, Circles are a way to group people in your network based on THEIR interests. The logic behind it is simple. Social networking is about SHARING. And you get to share stuff with people that is targeted to what you think they may like. I've simplified my Circles by creating just 7 of them. As you can see above, there's one Circle for my non-profit work, one for my writing interests, and another for my information marketing busi [ read more.. ]
