Google + In Ten Minutes a Day

If all you have is ten minutes to explore Google+ in your busy day, then these 6 easy steps are for you.
Now, I won’t lie. G+ sucks me in for 30 to 45 minutes daily – but I’m just learning to use it, and see my way to comfortably fitting it all into 600 crowded seconds soon.
1. Get Real
As +Vincent Mo, who has been beta-testing Google+ for almost a year, said: “Accept that you won’t ever read everything that’s on G+”
Then, choose the (tiny) bits you can consume – in the limited time you have to do it.
2. Be Organized
The key to intelligently absorbing what’s on G+ is in how you use Circles. I’ve blogged about how I’ve set up my Google+ Circles.
Remember 2 tenets:
- Your Circles are about SHARING – so arrange them by how you’ll share stuff
- Your Inbox Circle (or whatever you call it) is the one you’ll view often and consume content from
Using a ‘Read Later’ circle helps “sort your mail” – so you can focus on the gold whenever you’re free to concentrate on it.
3. Pick and Choose
Decide VERY carefully who gets into your Inbox Circle. Folks who are too noisy, too off-topic, too prolific, or even too entertaining will keep you on Google+ far beyond your self-assigned 10 minutes a day.
I’ve got 7 people in my Inbox Circle and add 1 or 2 daily – while removing those who aren’t as much value or fun as I first thought.
4. Consume Delicately
So you added someone to your Inbox Circle. Doesn’t mean you’re compelled to read or view everything they share!
Be discerning. Spend time only on what matters to you.
Within those limits, engage actively. Interact. Share. Comment. Click that +1 button. (In fact, before you forget, click the one on this post now – it’s down near the end of the message!)
5. Keep It Centralized
If you’re stuck on social media (Twitter, Facebook, SoKule, Empire Avenue, etc. – and now G+)… STOP!
When will you get things done if you’re flitting from one community to another? Centralize. Pull your friends and users from other networks into G+. Then engage with them only on one (or, if you like, a few) networks.
6. Ignore the RED BUTTON
There’s a sneaky device Google+ embeds on your user interface. It’s on the top right corner of your screen.
It’s red. It’s eye-catching. And it’s darn hard to resist!
That’s the one for ‘Notifications’ of events on your stream. Many are +1 or share updates, or comments by friends. Stuff you don’t ‘need’ – but you can’t help looking!
Help.
Or be prepared to follow me.
Because out of my 45 daily minutes on G+, I estimate 30 or more spent chasing the serendipity engine along crazy new tracks of exploration and discovery!
It’s fun.
